Registration Under Way for 5th Annual Alzheimer’s Conference at ICC Belden Center

ITAWAMBA, Miss. (WCBI) — Registration is under way for the fifth annual Northeast Mississippi Alzheimer’s conference, which is scheduled for May 8 from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center.

The conference is designed to foster interdisciplinary interactions among clinical and administrative healthcare professionals and caregivers concerned with aging and Dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. It will also provide interventions to bridge knowledge gaps and develop competence in managing disease process, life enhancing activity approaches to managing challenging behavior, recognizing signs of abuse and end of life issues.

Highlights of the program include Diagnosing Dementia: Identification, Assessment and Treatment Options; Outside of the Box Approach to Meaningful Activity Engagement; Elder Abuse: Signs, Symptoms – Interventions in Home and Community Settings; and Prag-matic: Solutions in a Stressful World.

Among the presenters will be Dr. Brian Thomas of the North Mississippi Medical Center Behavioral Health Center; Dr. Wayne Porter, Mississippi State University Extension Center; Jane Farmer, Comfort Creatures; Dr. Laura Pannell, Itawamba Community College faculty; Kathy VanCleave, LCMHT, MSDMH Division of Alzheimer’s; Sgt. Jason Putt, Lee County Sheriff’s Department; and Julie Orr, The Conversation Project, Sanctuary Hospice.

Cost is $20 for professionals (non-MGS members), $10 for professionals (MGS members) and free for caregivers and ICC gerontology students.

Sponsors include North Mississippi Medical Center, Mississippi Department of Mental Health, Itawamba Community College, Mississippi Gerontological Society and Sanctuary Hospice.
