STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- It has been a year and half since Starkville High School student Devin Mitchell was killed in a New Year’s Day drive-by shooting. His parents, Aubrey and Myrtle, are determined to keep his memory alive.

Just months after his death, they established the Devin Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund. Devin was a star student and athlete who would have graduated this year. The Mitchells say they want to give deserving students a chance to continue their education beyond high school.

Myrle Mitchell says, “Knowing that we could do something in his name to carry his legacy on.” His father adds, “It just reflects on what he liked to do: help people. And to give that scholarship in his name is just a joy.”

The Mitchells awarded the first scholarship Wednesday to Starkville High School senior Jamaiya Covington . She was chosen from eleven applications from five different schools.

Covington will be recognized again at a memorial program for Devin on Sunday at 2:00 p-m at Calvary Baptist Church in Starkville. The program is open to the public.
