Retail Sales Numbers Down

UNDATED, Miss. (WCBI)-New state numbers suggest Northeast Mississippi shoppers got hit with winter doldrums in January.

Across the region, taxes collected to January retail sales were down in 52 of 85 towns compared to January of last year.

But overall, the area’s total sales tax collections broke even compared to last year thanks to gains in the big retail markets of Louisville, New Albany, Pontotoc, Oxford, Tupelo and Starkville.

Those towns made up for declines in Amory, Booneville, Columbus, Corinth, Fulton and West Point.

The numbers are important because sales tax revenues pay for more than 40 percent of services like street paving and fire and police protection in most towns.
