COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus Light and Water loses some major money from its account.

The utility’s board of directors recently passed a $1.77 increase in residential bills, based on what customers are paying now, to make up for the shortfall.

General Manager Todd Gale says several factors played a role in why earnings were lower.

“Columbus Light and Water has experienced a loss in revenue from the previous year, somewhat around the tune of $1 million, and it primarly concern because of two major areas. One is a loss of a couple of major industries in Columbus, and the second is the increase costs of right-of-way along the power lines in the city,” explained Gale.

The new rate hike takes effect in October.
