Role of Nurse Practitioners Becoming More Important

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Almost daily changes in health care will make nurse practitioners even more valuable, a veteran state legislator says.

State Sen. Terry Burton says the array of changes coming under Medicaid and Medicare and from the private sector makes it both an exciting and challenging future for them. During a talk Monday, Burton encouraged nurse practitioners and other advanced professionals at MUW to continue pursuing their careers because they are the key to meeting health care reform’s goals.

“But I do know that accessibility, availability, and affordability are going to be key, and they always have been in Mississippi, going to be even more key with the need for health care to be provided for our citizens,” Burton said.

Burton is a member of the Senate’s public health committee, which deals with many of the changes in state laws that impact Medicaid and insurance.
