FAYETTE, AL. (WCBI)- It’s money that’s been needed for a long time.

Now, federal grant funds will improve life for people who live in Fayette, Alabama.

Two Community Development Block Grants will be used to replace old sewer lines and extend water services

A large crowd was on hand as Governor Robert Bentley, announced the two new Community Block Development grants for Fayette Alabama.

“Primarily this is to help the lives of people in this community,” Alabama Governor Robert Bentley said.

“Water and sewer rehab is important, so yes, this is very important to our community as well as the other small communities,” Fayette Mayor Jay Nelson said.

A 264 thousand dollar grant will extending water services throughout the city.

“25 homes in the pea ridge area will have water,” Bentley said.

Bentley says he knows how vital it is for the Pea Ridge area to now have water.

“If you get passed a certain line in Alabama, you can’t drill down because you hit rock, so these houses have not had water, and what they have had, has been difficult to obtain,” Bentley said.

The second grant is for 450 thousand dollars, and will be used to replace sewer lines throughout the county.

“We’re talking about 120 homes, 133 citizens that are going to be affected by this,” Nelson said.

Mayor Jay Nelson says bad sewer services have been a big problem.

“Or infrastructure is so outdated, it’s 60, 70 years old, so this is really going to help,” Nelson said.

Getting these grants took a nine month process, and Nelson says both the city and county will benefit greatly from this.
Mayor Jay Nelson says he expects work to begin on these projects within the next few months.
