As Christmas cheer fills the air, unfortunately crime seems to as well.

It’s a time of giving and unfortunately, it can be a time for taking, but there are ways to keep your surprises safe.

“If you’re going to buy gifts, put them in the trunk and lock them, make sure that you lock your doors,” says Columbus Interim Police Chief Fred Shelton.

and while you’re still on the hunt for the perfect gift …

“Make sure you park at the front of the mall, when you come out to get into your vehicle, make sure you have your keys ready,” he says.

Columbus Interim Police Chief Fred Shelton says when you’re swiping your card, don’t hold it out in the open because any smart phone can snap a pic that could cost you.

“Possibly can capture your credit card number or information on your credit card.”

He says the key to staying safe is watching your back and keeping and eye on your loved ones as well.

“Remain vigilant, be on the look out for things that’s not normal, that shouldn’t be happening because again, with this many people out, criminals try to take advantage.”

Some other tips Shelton mentioned were never post on social media that you are going out of town, don’t post pictures of your presents and be cautious of fundraising scams.

You can always call CPD to see if a fundraiser is legitimate.
