Scottish, Victorian Author To Speak At MUW Commencement

COLUMBUS, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) – Ian Campbell, emeritus professor of Scottish and Victorian literature at the University of Edinburgh, will be the commencement speaker for Mississippi University for Women Saturday, May 14 in Rent Auditorium, Whitfield Hall.

Approximately 340 students have applied for May graduation. Conferring of degrees for graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Professional Studies and College of Education and Human Sciences will start at 10 a.m.

Conferring of degrees for graduates of the College of Nursing and Speech-Language Pathology will start at 2 p.m.

Also a teaching fellow in the English Department, Campbell has been on the staff of the University of Edinburgh since 1967.

He retired in 2009, and has also held visiting appointments in USA, Canada and Europe.

One of the senior editors of the Duke-Edinburgh edition of the Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle (Duke UP, 43 vols. to date) he has also published on Scottish literature, on Victorian and modern literature.

Campbell also is at work on an introduction to George Douglas Brown, author of “The House with the Green Shutters” and on an edition of new letters by Charles Eliot Norton.

In addition to these ongoing projects, Campbell reads manuscripts for publishers in Scotland and overseas and reviews for scholarly journals for the press, radio and television.

Campbell has lectured in many countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Canada, Japan and the United States.

Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, Campbell was educated in Swiss and Scottish schools.

He earned his doctorate from Edinburgh University in 1970 and his master of arts degree with first-class honors in English language and literature from Aberdeen University in 1964.
