Shakespeare Lives

MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY – Actors with the Virginia-based American Shakespeare Center will be conducting workshops for local high and middle school students.

The theatrical group will be in the Golden Triangle for a Friday performance of “Twelfth Night” at Mississippi State’s Lee Hall as part of the university’s 2012-13 Lyceum Series.

Beginning at 1:30 Thursday at both MSU’s McComas Hall main theater and the Rosenzweig Art Center in downtown Columbus, ASC members will begin the free training and education session, to which all interested members of the public also are invited to watch.

At McComas Hall, students will be attending from Starkville Academy, Starkville Christian School and Starkville High School.

The Columbus session will involve students from New Hope High School, Columbus Middle School and Oak Hill Academy in West Point, as well home-school participants.

MSU communication professor Donna L. Clevinger said the members of the ASC troupe “are both professional actors and professional teachers.”

She said the actors also will hold two Friday campus workshops at the Shackouls Honors College. Taking place in the Honors Forum Room the 10 a.m. session will be for MSU students, while the 2 p.m. session will be devoted to students attending East Mississippi Community College.

Visitor seating for these Shackouls sessions will be limited. The forum room is located at 401 Griffis Residence Hall in the north-campus Zacharias Village residential complex.

Clevinger said organizers deeply appreciate the ASC outreach effort and believe the experience will “make the works of Shakespeare come alive for these students.”

In addition to the MSU communication department and honors college, campus sponsors for the workshop experience include the English department and College of Arts and

Sciences.

Support also has been provided by South Arts, the Mississippi Arts Commission, Mississippi Humanities Council, Starkville Area Arts Council, and Greater Starkville Development Partnership. Other supporters include the Rosenzweig Center, Renasant Bank, MSU Foundation, Lyceum Series, Starkville Book Mart, and art and education faculty members and other private donors.
