COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus won’t change its nepotism policy to provide more flexibility for hiring potential employees.

Councilmen heard a proposal that provided no real changes to the existing rules. Columbus Mayor Robert Smith broke a tie to stick with the city’s current policy.

The issue came about after a fireman left his job two weeks ago after being warned he was violating employee rules.

Smith says three public works employees were fired in the last two years for violating the nepotism policy.
