COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A local family was reunited today after a soldier made a surprise return home from active duty. Six-year old Olivia McMurdy couldn’t believe her mother was back home. McMurdy has three daughters and Olivia and her younger sister Natalie are students at Heritage Academy in Columbus.

Jacqueline McMurdy is an Army Sergeant and was deployed in Africa nearly a year ago. Her husband Nate has been home with their three girls holding down the fort but Jaqueline says having a supportive family has made all the difference.

“It’s been difficult to be away but at the same time it’s been kind of a blessing in disguise because I’ve got a lot of support from family. Father-in-law is prior military, my family is from a military line so, grateful and kind of unusual at the same time,” says McMurdy.

The couple says they’re looking forward to spending some quality time together and Nate McMurdy says a good samaritan offered to help them do just that.

“When I was waiting to get my wife off the plane holding a sign, a beautiful lady came by and gave me a 100 bucks for dinner and said go enjoy yourself. Thank you very much ma’am.” says McMurdy.

The McMurdys will soon be on the move again. This time they’re headed to Germany. Sergeant Jaqueline McMurdy has been in the Army for nine years.
