SPD Animal Control Unit Warns Of Snake Appearances As Temperatures Rise

STARKVILLE, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) – Starkville Police Department Animal Control unit would like to advise citizens that it’s getting warmer and snakes are becoming more active.

In the last few weeks, calls about snakes in or around property have increased.

This is not uncommon for this time of year. Snakes are generally shy animals that want nothing to do with people. A lot of the time they are just passing through.

Although most species of snakes in North America are harmless, there are some venomous species that can pose a risk to humans and pets.

The first steps in keeping snakes away from your house is to control the factors that are attracting them in the first place.

Animal Control Officer Sarah Akins provided the following tips:

– Remove weeds, excess vegetation, piles of debris, yard clutter, and any other areas where snakes can hide.

– Get rid of any pest problem, snakes are attracted to locations with plentiful food sources such as large insects, frogs, mice, etc.

– Inspect and seal any crevices around the foundation of your house to keep snakes from getting inside. A space no wider than your finger can be all these reptiles need.

-Keep compost piles in a closed container to keep snakes and rodents away from your house.

If you see a snake stay away from it and call the Starkville Police Department’s Animal Control unit. Their number is 662-769-2728 and their normal business hours are 8 A.M. to 6 P.M. Monday through Friday.

After hours contact the Starkville Police Department at 662-323-4131.
