‘Spice’ May Have Been Involved in Burglary

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus police think a 29-year-old New Orleans man may have been high on a mixture of the synthetic drug spice when he broke into a Columbus home Friday afternoon.

A neighbor called police shortly after 4 to say a man was breaking into a home in the 1500 block of 27th Street North.

Officers found the door to the home kicked and and took the suspect into custody. He initially fought with officers, “barking like a dog,” officers said, before becoming almost comatose.

Police found what appeared to be spice in his pocket.

He was taken to Baptist Golden Triangle for treatment before being arrested on burglary charges.

Columbus Republican State Rep. Gary Chism sponsored legislation three years ago to ban “spice” in Mississippi. Chism acted after seeing a series of stories on WCBI about how the chemicals used in ‘spice’ have a similar effect as amphetamine. Law enforcement officers across the region, state and country tell stories of wild reactions from suspects who use ‘spice’ and another synthetic chemical, called bath salts.
