Video: Spring Break Impacts Starkville Businesses

[bitsontherun plc6FJk1]STARKVILLE, Miss. – (WCBI)  When MSU students head out of town on spring break, an area of Starkville becomes like a ghost town.

“Well its definitely quieter. I’m glad we had a really good week last week to kind of help get us braised for the slower week this week. And Mississippi State baseball certainly has helped us out,” said Bobby Martin, Three Little Pigs.

“In some respects yes. You know they are a major part of our business, so it does slow down a little bit, but we still have a lot of regulars. And everybody is still working this week,” said Mary Tkach, City Bagel.

The Cotton District along University Drive is usually jammed pack with pedestrians and bike traffic, but on Monday everything was slowed to a crawl. Local merchants have already factored into their bottom line for the absence of students this time of year.

“In Starkville it gets pretty quiet. We were joking about the tumble weed passing by,” said Martin.

Owners also know that students may come and go, but long time faithful customers keep them in business.

“Concentrating on the community. Because any community business thrives off the people that live and work in that community,” said Tim Turman, Stromboli’s.

“We have a lot of regulars. We do, they’ve helped us survive,” adds Tkach.

Merchants who in the past have closed down for spring break, are finding out its better for business to remain open.
