VARDAMAN, Miss. ( WCBI) — It is a form of breast cancer that will eventually kill you.

And one victim of metastatic breast cancer is Bettye Edmundson of Vardaman who Saturday was visited by representatives of METAvivor Research and Support, a national non-profit organization founded by four women with metastatic breast cancer, also known as stage IV breast cancer.

C.J Cornelissen-James is one of the founders who is part of a cross country tour calling attention to this deadly disease.

“Metastatic breast cancer actually occurs when your breast cancer leaves the breast and it travels to other parts of your body,” she points out. “Most commonly it goes to the lung, liver, bones, or brain. But it can go anyplace in your body. And when that happens, it is a fatal disease,” Cornelissen-James points out.

She says the normal life expectancy for a victim of stage IV breast cancer is only three years. But she has so far beaten the odds, having been diagnosed over 8 and half years ago.

And she says Edmunson has survived 5 and a half years. She says they desperately need funds for research.

The METAvivor Research and Support began its tour in Annapolis Maryland and will eventually finish in Los Angeles.
