STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A long time Starkville activist died Monday. Dorothy Bishop, 71, succumbed to a long illness.

She died at Baptist Golden Triangle after being transferred from a nursing home.

Bishop, a civil rights icon in Oktibbeha County, rallied for a number of causes over the years.

She pushed for a unity monument, the repeal of the death penalty, and healthcare.

At one point, Bishop chained herself to the old courthouse steps for a cause.

Funeral arraignments have not been announced.
