STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Starkville water crews are flushing lines across the city after receiving numerous reports of dingy water that smells like iron.

Starkville Public Works Director Doug Devlin says much of the work is being done in the northern part of the city where complaints are concentrated. But he says crews are working wherever complaints are received to get water back to normal.

Problems began when the city recently stopped its line flushing routine to focus on updating infrastructure maps.

The maps are needed to avoid line breaks when communications companies install fiber optic lines.

Then Monday, when a water pressure filter brought back on line in the Bluefield area, it made the brown water worse. The discoloration comes when iron oxide sediment that lines many old cast iron pipes breaks free.
