Starkville High Research Project Lands Teacher Out Of Classroom

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A student led research project is causing controversy at Starkville High School.

Now, a teacher is out of the classroom.

The Starkville – Oktibbeha County Consolidated School District issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

Administrators say the project included material related to human sexuality and contraceptives.

In a petition on www.change.org, the teacher is identified as Sherre Ferguson.

It says Ferguson has been taken out of the classroom and organizers want her teaching again.

The school district says the presentation is now a personnel matter, limiting what information can be released.

In a video posted on Facebook, the student give a presentation about the career path she wants to take as a sexologist. Then explains what a person in the field does every day.

The student then has the class do a demonstration with a contraceptive, while the teacher is in the classroom.

This apparently violates several school district policies, according to the school’s website.

Here is a link to the policy: http://starkville.msbapolicy.org/DistrictPolicies/ViewsAdmin/SelectedDocumentReadOnly/tabid/4039/Default.aspx?docId=149720

Nearly 2,000 people have signed the petition to reinstate Ferguson.
