Starkville, MS (WCBI)- A family of seven is homeless after an early Wednesday morning fire in Oktibbeha County.

The fire started about 2-30 at the house on Yeates Subdivision Road.

Flames consumed the house before the Adaton Volunteer Fire Department brought the fire under control.

Everything inside was destroyed, including Christmas presents.

Family members say a child saved them.

“My grand baby was sleeping and he started coughing, which alerted my daughter that to get up and when she got up…and when she got up, she realized the house was on fire. Some was everywhere. So, that basically got us up and got us out of there. My grand baby saved our lives.”

It’s believed the fire started in the attic.

The Oktibbeha Starkville Emergency Response Volunteer Services organization is assisting the family.
