STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — From the garden to the table. Pre-school students at Emerson Family School in Starkville are learning where some of their food comes from.

As part of the school’s “Fresh Start” Initiative, students and staff planted a vegetable garden Friday.

As their garden grows, students will learn more about the veggies and making healthy food choices. The most exciting part will likely be harvest time. They’ll get to eat what they’ve grown.

“Most of the children have never seen or heard of some of the fruits and vegetables. Sometimes, they’ve never seem a pineapple and we can actually let them eat pineapple. And sometimes they never eaten a tomato before and so they just get to see where fruits and vegetables come from,” says volunteer Kaylyn Cade.

Fresh Start was established at Emerson Preschool in 2011 by a group of concerned parents.
