MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The state rests without calling either of two controversial expert witnesses in the murder retrial of former MSU professor Dr. David Parvin.

Prosecutors opted not to call Dr. Steven Hayne, the state’s former pathologistor a ballistics expert the last two days of the trial that began Monday in Monroe County Circuit Court.

Instead, prosecutors focused on building a circumstantial case relying on inconsistencies in Parvin’s statements to detectives, the affair he was having and his bad relationship with his wife.

The 76 former agriculture economics professor is accused of shooting his wife in the head while she sat at a computer in their Aberdeen home in 2007.

Parvin claims the shooting was accidental.

He was convicted previously and sentenced to life but last year, the state Supreme Court ruled testimony from Hayne and the expert was unreliable and ordered a new trial.

Parvin’s attorney Jim Waide is expected to call Hayne to the stand Friday.

The trial is expected to last until early next week.
