Video: State Test Scores Show Mixed Results

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Almost half of Mississippi high school students met or exceed expectations in English last year, while about 27 percent did so in algebra I. That’s according to test results released Thursday.

Those are the first findings from Mississippi’s only administration of a multi-state test meant to measure achievement under new academic standards.

The results are a big drop from the 2014 state tests, when 76 percent of students rated proficient or advanced on the previous Mississippi-only algebra test, while 56 percent were rated proficient or advanced in English.

The drop was expected, though. State Superintendent Carey Wright says standards on Mississippi’s old tests were too low.

Wright says Mississippi students did “extremely well” compared to English results released by other states, and were roughly in line with states in algebra I.
