State Updates Road Progress in North Mississippi

TUPELO, Miss. — As the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues to provide a safe, efficient and sustainable intermodal transportation network for the traveling public, below is a list of project updates in North Mississippi’s District One.

“In an effort to provide the public with timely information regarding current transportation improvement projects, MDOT offers this list of projects, detailing current work taking place across North Mississippi,” said Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert.

State Route 9 Improvement Project – Complete

State Route 15 Project in Union County – Complete

U.S. Highway 15 Grade and Drain Project – Complete

U.S. Highway 45 Grade, Drain and Bridge Project – Complete

U.S. Highway 45 Widening Project near Brooksville

A project is underway on U.S. Highway 45 near Brooksville to Carson Road in Lowndes and Noxubee Counties. This project will be a pave, grade, drain, bridge project to upgrade approximately 6.4 miles of roadway where the two new lanes will be constructed parallel to the existing lanes. This project was let in January of 2011 and awarded to Phillips Contracting Co., Inc., of Columbus, MS. The project costs $17,977,057 and has a projected completion date of July 2013. The project is approximately 53% complete.

State Route 6 Paving Project in Pontotoc and Lee Counties

A paving project on the relocated State Route 6 from State Route 342 in Pontotoc County to U.S. Highway 45 south of Tupelo in Lee County, is underway and is approximately 40% complete. This project was let in April 2012 with a projected completion date of June 2014. The contractor on this $26,063,700 project is APAC-Mississippi, Inc. This is a four-lane section and will tie the relocated State Route 6 from State Route 342 in Pontotoc County into U.S. Highway 45 in Tupelo.

U.S. Highway 78 Upgrade in Union County

A project to upgrade a section of U.S. Highway 78 to current interstate standards, from just west of State Route 30 to just east of State Route 15 in New Albany, is currently under construction. The contractor for this $18,996,585 project is Hill Brothers Construction Company of Falkner, MS. This project began in March 2012 and is expected to be complete in November 2013. The project is approximately 35% complete.

U.S. Highway 43 in Attala County

Malouf Construction has completed construction, with the exception of some punch list items, on the final phase of a four-phase project to widen two-lane U.S. Highway 43 into three-lane and five-lane sections in Kosciusko, which includes approximately one-third of a mile on the south end of the project.

Bridge Replacement on State Route 12 in Attala County

A bridge replacement project in Attala County was recently awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, Inc. This $19,191,477 project includes replacing 12 bridges on State Route 12 from Kosciusko to the Choctaw County Line. Traffic is utilizing detour roads at two sites (Munson Creek and Hurricane Creek) while the existing bridges are removed and the new bridges are constructed. A detour road is also under construction at the Cole Creek Tributary site. The project is approximately 24% complete with an expected completion date of June 2013.

Bridge Replacement on State Route 8 in Calhoun County

Key, LLC, of Madison, MS is the prime contractor on this project. The $6,427,668 project includes replacing three bridges on State Route 8 from Calhoun City to Derma. Work began on March 6, 2012. The contractor has placed traffic on the detour roads/bridges at each site (1,2,3). The existing bridge at site 3 has been removed and construction of the new bridge has started. The project is approximately 39% complete and is scheduled for completion in October 2013.

Grade, Drain, Bridge, and Pave U.S. Highway 51 North of Yalobusha River to Interstate 55

Talbot Brothers Construction and Grading, Inc. of Nesbit, MS is the prime contractor on this $19,493,000 project in Grenada County. The federal aid project will replace seven bridges on U.S. Highway 51 from north of the Yalobusha River to Interstate 55. Additional lanes will also be constructed and will include ten-foot wide shoulders and a concrete median with turn lanes for access. Traffic has been routed on the new roadway, and phase II construction has started. Most of the earthwork, clearing, and one bridge (Bridge G) have been completed on phase II. The project is approximately 66% percent complete and scheduled for completion in June 2013.

Widen and Overlay State Route 7 in Grenada County

Lehman-Roberts of Memphis, TN is the prime contractor on this $1,192,000 project. The project consists of milling and overlaying five miles of State Route 7 from U.S. Highway 51 to the Grenada/ Yalobusha County Line. This project has been completed (September 24, 2012).

Widen and Overlay U.S. Highway 51, in Yalobusha County

Lehman-Roberts of Memphis, TN is the prime contractor on this $1,715,000 project. The project consists of milling and overlaying seven miles of U.S. Highway 51 from the Grenada/Yalobusha County Line to Tillatoba. This project has been completed (October 29, 2012).

Interstate 55 in Panola County

Lehman-Roberts Company of Memphis, TN has successfully completed work on a project on Interstate 55 in Panola County. This $13,784,944 project provides for milling and overlaying Interstate 55 from south of the intersection of State Route 6 to Cobb Road, north of Batesville. This contract prevents work on the ramps and loops during peak traffic hours, so the work will be performed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the weekdays and all day on Saturdays.

U.S. Highway 161 in Coahoma County

Lehman Roberts Company of Memphis, TN has successfully completed a $1,210,363 mill and overlay project on U.S. Highway 161 in Coahoma County from the Sunflower River bridge south to the U.S. Highway 61 Bypass in Clarksdale. This project will include the milling and overlaying of the five-lane section through town and the overlaying of the two-lane section south of town that connects with the U.S. Highway 61 Bypass.

U.S. Highway 1 in Coahoma County

Lehman Roberts Company of Memphis, TN was awarded a $2,834,750 overlay project on U.S. Highway 1 in Coahoma County from the Bolivar County Line north to Sherard. This project will include trench widening and an overlay of the existing highway and curb and gutter work in the town of Rena Lara. All asphalt is complete and miscellaneous items are being worked on as of the end of July. This project has an expected completion date of December 2012.

Raised Pavement Markers (Districtwide)

Hodges, Inc. of Ripley, MS has successfully completed a $354,902 project to replace raised pavement markers along various routes in District Two.

Interstate 55 in Yalobusha County

Superior Asphalt, Inc. of Jackson, MS has begun work on a project on Interstate 55 in Yalobusha County. This $17,533,002.50 project provides for milling and overlaying Interstate 55 from the southern Panola County Line to north of the Tillatoba exit. The Enid and Oakland exits are currently undergoing ramp extensions to lengthen the acceleration and deceleration lanes entering and exiting the Interstate 55 mainline. This project has an expected completion date of September 2013.

U.S. Highway 3 in Quitman County

Lehman-Roberts Company of Memphis, TN has successfully completed a $1,757,645.10 overlay project on U.S. Highway 3 in Quitman County from the State Route 6 interchange north of Marks to Darling. This project will provide repair of trench widening, slope correction, and a new surface lift of asphalt.

U.S. Highway 7 in Lafayette County

Lehman-Roberts Company of Memphis, TN was awarded a $3,956,720.80 overlay project on U.S. Highway 7 in Lafayette County from the State Route 30 interchange north to the Tallahatchie River Bridge. This project will provide widening and overlaying of the existing road and the addition of a turn lane into the Woodland Hills Subdivision. All asphalt work is complete and final striping of the roadway is currently underway. This project has an expected completion date of March 2013.

U.S. Highway 305 in Tate County

N.L. Carson Construction Company of Carthage, MS was awarded a $9,666,640.44 bridge replacement project on U.S. Highway 305 in Tate County. This project will provide the replacement and removal of five bridges along the U.S. Highway 305 mainline from State Route 4 to the Desoto County Line. All bridges are currently under construction, and traffic will be turned onto a newly constructed detour road beginning in January 2013. This job has an expected completion date of October 2013.

U.S. Highway 51 in Tate County

Tanner Construction Co. of Ellisville, MS, continues work on a $17,392,383 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) project that included grading, drainage, and bridge work to add two additional lanes on U.S. Highway 51 between Senatobia and Coldwater. Construction of the project is near completion. The final surface lift of asphalt was completed on the roadway facilities on November 30, 2012, with just a few driveway and business fronts remaining. As soon as the waiting period is over the permanent pavement markings will be placed bringing the project to substantial completion within a couple of weeks.

Interstate 55 in Tate and Desoto Counties

White Construction of Cordova, TN was awarded a safety project that includes clearing of the right way of trees that could potentially be hazardous to a vehicle leaving the road and installing cable barrier fencing and other safety items. This project is complete pending final documents.

Bridge Replacements on State Route 4 in Tate County

A bridge replacement project in Tate County was recently awarded to Talbot Brothers Construction and Grading, Inc. of Nesbit, MS. This $6,567,891 federal aid project consists of replacing two bridges at Arkabutla Creek and Smith’s Ditch. Traffic has been diverted onto the newly constructed detour and the contractor is working on both replacement bridge sites. The project is on schedule to meet the expected completion date of June 21, 2013.

Interstate 55/State Route 740 Interchange in Tate County

Webster Electric of Meridian, MS was awarded a $473,090 safety project that will consist of installing street lights at the interchange of Interstate 55 and State Route 740; also including the intersection of Scott Road and U.S. Highway 51. This project is substantially complete waiting the contract specified burn in period for final acceptance.

Interstate 269 in Desoto County

Work is underway on the first section of Interstate 269 in Desoto County. Joe McGee Construction Company, Inc. of Lake, MS was awarded a $39,998,460.65 contract for the construction of portion of Interstate 269. This project is approximately 1.9 mile in length, from just east of State Route 305 to 1700 feet east of the Coldwater River. Work completed under this contract will include clearing, earthwork, bridge construction, and drainage features. The paving work will be let under a separate contract in the future. The contractor is currently constructing the roadway embankment from the BOP to the west end of the Coldwater River Bridge. Also under construction are the Bridges substructures for Bridges “A” underpass of local road and Bridges “B” over the Coldwater River. The project is approximately 16% complete with approximately 13% of the contract time elapsed and an expected completion date of September 2014.

U.S. Highway 78 Rubblization Project in Desoto/Marshall Counties

Construction is underway on the rubblization project on U.S. Highway 78 between the Coldwater River and West Holly Springs exit in Desoto and Marshall Counties. Lehman Roberts Co., Inc., of Memphis, TN was awarded the $39,978,826 project, which will use a process known as rubblization to crumble the existing concrete pavement into a new foundation for a new asphalt structure on top. In addition to the rubblization and asphalt pavement, other work including new guardrail, signing, pavement marking and drainage repairs will be completed in order to bring this section of U.S. Highway 78 up to interstate standards. A traffic management center will also be installed on this project to provide motorists with up-to-the-minute information. Work has been going on since early 2011, and is approximately 90% complete. The Contractor is currently working on placing asphalt on the interchange ramps, installing all the ITS equipment, placing shoulder gravel. Work is scheduled for completion in June 2013.

U.S. Highway 78 Rehabilitation Project in Marshall County

MDOT continues to move forward with plans to upgrade existing U.S. Highway 78 to interstate standards in preparation of the future Interstate 22 designation. A project was let in May 2011 to Rogers Group, Inc. The $21,333,639 project will include overlaying the existing roadway, new pavement markings and signs, and upgrades to the median. In addition, the entrance and exit ramps at the West Holly Springs and Holly Springs interchanges will be extended to meet current interstate standards. The contractor is currently placing final lifts of asphalt on the guardrail pads along mainline, paving interchange ramps, paving county roads, and placing shoulder gravel. This work is expected to be completed in December 2012.

Interstate 269 in Marshall County

Work is underway on the first section of Interstate 269 in Marshall County. Tanner Construction Company, Inc. of Ellisville, MS, has been awarded a $19,524,520 contract for the construction of the first leg of Interstate 269. This project is approximately 3.1 miles long and goes from just south of State Route 302 to the Tennessee State Line. Work completed under this contract will include clearing, earthwork, bridge construction, and drainage features. The paving work will be let under a separate contract in the future. The contractor currently has three (3) bridge crews on site working on the Bridges spanning State Route 302, Wingo Road, and the Nonconnah Creek bridges. Earthwork operations are complete, and those forces are attempting to maintain the installed BMP’s. The project is approximately 71% complete with an expected completion date of October 2013. In Mississippi, Interstate 269 will begin at the Intersection of Interstate 55 and Interstate 69 north of Hernando, cross Highway 78 near Byhalia and continue northeast to the Tennessee state line. This project is one section of the planned nationwide Interstate 69 project.

Interstate 269 in Marshall County

Work is underway on the third section of Interstate 269 in Marshall County. Eutaw Construction Company, Inc. of Aberdeen, MS has been awarded a $31,999,237 contract for the construction of the third leg of Interstate 269. This project is approximately 0.8 miles long and goes from just East of Mason Road to Station 835+00 near the intersection of U.S. Highway 78 and Interstate 269. Work completed under this contract will include clearing, earthwork, bridge construction, and drainage features. The paving work will be let under a separate contract in the future. The contractor is currently driving piles, installing pipes, installing Erosion Control BMP’s, and executing earthwork operations. The project is approximately 8% complete with an expected completion date of October 2014. In Mississippi, Interstate 269 will begin at the intersection of Interstate 55 and Interstate 69 north of Hernando, cross Highway 78 near Byhalia and continue northeast to the Tennessee State Line. This project is one section of the planned nationwide Interstate 69 project.
