Statutory Rape Charge Dropped Against Teen

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Prosecutors have dropped the statutory rape charge against a Lowndes County teenager.

Javonte Ellis, 17, was charged with having sex with a 14 year-old girl.

Justice Court Judge Ron Cooke says prosecutors realized there wasn’t 36 months age difference, as required by law for a statutory rape charge.

Ellis was arrested at New Hope High School back in March.

Lowndes County detectives say it remains an ongoing investigation.

New Hope students 18 year-olds Brenton Spann and Tyler Staples remain charged with statutory rape, involving a different female.
