SULLIGENT, Ala. (WCBI) — A Sulligent school is getting a first of its kind storm shelter in Alabama.

Construction on the $3.8 million building started Thursday at Sulligent High School.

It will also serve as a gym for students.

The shelter will be able to seat 830 people, and hold 1500.

“The campus is very spread out,” said Supt. Garth Moss, Lamar County Schools. “There are multiple buildings here, and this one structure will be able to house all our students, as well as our teachers and support staff in a safe place, in case there is tornado type weather in our area.”

Moss says Lamar County commissioners extended a one cent sales tax to pay for the project, and borrowed the rest of the money.

The shelter should be complete in a year, as long as the weather cooperates.
