HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) — A group of Houston High School students are on the verge of running away with a 13th national title.

The Sundancer solar car team started the seventh day of racing this morning far ahead of the rest of the field in any classification in the Winston Solar Car Challenge race from Fort Worth, Texas to Los Angeles.

Through Sunday, the Sundancer crew had logged 540 of a possible 637 miles on the road. The next closest mileage was the 460 covered by the Byron Nelson Solar Car team. Byron Nelson competes in the Classic division and Houston competes in the Open division.

Barring a major breakdown, Houston will easily win that classification as well. The second place team from Walnut Grove, Calif., is 470 miles behind.

The race ends Tuesday when the teams arrive in Los Angeles.
