Supervisors Push Change in Housing Tax Break

NESHOBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s costing other taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. And city and county leaders want the Legislature to end it.

County supervisors converged on Capitol today to push their agendas with legislators who returned to Jackson Tuesday. One big issue is a 2005 law that gives developers of Section 42 low- and moderate-income housing a big property tax break.

The developers say the breaks are the only way they can make money.

Local governments say it only rewards wealthy developers at the expense of other property owners.

For instance, the difference in taxes is more than $144,000 in Neshoba County and more than $400,000 in Lowndes County.

Neshoba County supervisors this week approved a resolution urging legislators to revoke or at least revise the tax break, which has been through the state’s court system, resulting in a ruling for the developers.
