COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi’s roads are a hot issue for the state legislature this session.

That’s why the Northern District Transportation Commissioner spoke to the Columbus Rotary Club Tuesday on what transportation means for economic development and job creation.

Mike Tagert also highlighted working with the Mississippi Economic Council in improving the state’s transportation system.

WCBI asked Tagert how the state plans to pay for future road improvements.

“It behooves all of us to make certain we can provide an adequate, and the safest system we possibly can,” Tagert said. “We are working with the legislature and business community to try and find certain ways to pay for those improvements, and make certain that we can maintain the system we built, as well as build for the future.”

Tuesday’s meeting was held at the Lion Hills Club in Columbus.
