TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) –  One teenager is in custody, another is recovering from a gunshot wound and  police are talking to a lot of people, trying to find what led to the shooting.

Ollie Owens was on his porch visiting with friends, family and watching his grandkids play in his yard Wednesday morning, when shots rang out from his neighbor’s house.

“Then the little boy ran out, jumped in my arms, he went up on my porch, blood is there where I tried to get him off, they begged me not to call the police, but I called them anyway,” Owens said.

Paramedics arrived within minutes and took the 14 year old victim to the hospital. The 13 year old suspect ran from the scene, making his way to Tupelo Middle School. He was arrested by School Resource Officers Neil Naron and Jon Bramble. An unloaded 38 caliber handgun was also recovered.

“We monitor the 9 1 1 radios and we had placed the campus on partial lockdown because we were aware this incident was close by, as soon as they were notified, it was potentially a student, and they had the name because of the relationships they recognized the student, we were very proactive in keeping it safe,” said TPSD Supt. Gearl Loden.

Owens is a retired construction worker who has lived on South Highland Drive for 22 years. He just wants a safe neighborhood for his grandkids.

“If he had come out here, if he had shot toward my house he would probably have hit somebody on my front porch,” Owens said.

Police have interviewed the victim, who is recovering from a gunshot wound to his ear, and there are some big questions in this case. Primarily, what were the two teenage young men doing at this house when they should have been in school? Police say they are looking into all that.

Police have not decided what charges will be filed against the shooter. The homeowner where the shooting occurred did not have any comment.
