COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The CDC says about 3 million women are at risk of exposing their developing baby to alcohol.

The organization suggests women either get on the pill or don’t drink to lower that number.

It’s a suggestion that’s making a stir.

“The number 1 cause of fetal mental retardation is maternal alcohol use in pregnancy,” says Dr. Duke Wood.

Dr. Duke Wood says that problem is preventable and says women should take precautions if they could be pregnant or might become pregnant.

“Alcohol use during the pregnancy in any in any facet is unsafe,” says Dr. Wood.

Dr. Wood says the affects of taking the risk can be devastating.

“Lifelong, it’s everlasting, they will never go away. Structural abnormalities like with fetuses skeletal system. major organ systems are involved, mainly the heart and the brain. Lots of other delays,” he adds.

He says it’s important to realize it’s your job to make the best decision for your body and baby.

“Consider that when you are child bearing age, and you are in a sexual relationship, and not using protection, you could potentially conceive and in so doing, you have to take the responsibility of that unborn fetus,” says Dr. Wood.

Dr. Wood says the American College of OBGYN recommends doctors screen at annual visits and early in pregnancy for alcohol use.
