Thompson Case Denied Oral Arguments

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Rickey Thompson was denied an opportunity to present his case in person before the Mississippi Supreme Court.

The case of the Lee County Justice Court Judge was placed on the calendar of the state’s supreme court Wednesday and was scheduled to go through Feb. 27 as the first sitting.

In October, Thompson’s lawyer admitted the violations of the Lee County Judge, but requested the opportunity to present oral arguments that the recommended lifetime ban was too harsh.

According to the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance, Judge Rickey Thompson has admitted to misconduct on the bench and should be removed from office and pay $11,000.

The commission ruled that Thompson engaged in misconduct in several ways, including:

  • He used his work office to forward the private interest of others.
  • He denied a person to the right to be represented by their personal attorney.
  • He allowed drug court participants to stay in the program after the two-year limit expired, which is against state laws.
  • He abused his power by incarcerating drug court participants for extended sentences without allowing them due process.
  • He enrolled people from other court systems that did not have drug courts. He also continued this act after being told by the Mississippi Attorney General’s office that he did not have permission.

Thompson was reprimanded in 2008 and 2012. He was also fined $2,000 and suspended in the 2012 case.
