Three Running in Columbus Mayoral Race

COLUMBUS, Miss. – (WCBI) The Columbus mayor’s race gets a little more interesting just minutes before Friday’s qualifying deadline.

Columbus republican and community activist Glenn Lautzenhiser qualified late this afternoon to challenge incumebnt Democrat Robert Smith. Lautzenhiser, who serves on the school board and has been a member of the convention and visitors bureau board, said he could not ignore the concerns of the many friends and taxpayers who said they were looking for alternative.

“I have wrestled with this, I’ve gone back and forth, I’ve weighed the pros and cons. I have come to the conclusion that this is what I should do but one thing that I want to say is that I am not going to run a negative campaign. I am going to tell the others what I think I bring to the table and let them make their decision accordingly, ” Lautzenhiser.

Smith is running as a Democrat and Columbus businessman Bo Jarrett is running as an Independent. The three will meet in the June 4th general election.
