TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Realtors in one city had a chance to attend an unique open house. This open house was hosted by the local school district and gave businessmen and women a chance to tour the largest high school in the state.

They gathered at the parking lot of the North Mississippi Board of Realtors, to take the Tupelo High School Golden Wave Bus to this open house.

Moments later they joined other realtors at Tupelo High School for the special event.

“We’re excited to host the realtors association,” THS Principal Jason Harris said.

The Open House for realtors began with a breakfast and assembly at the school’s Fine Arts Building. In recent years, home sales outside the city have been on the rise, while transactions inside the city have not kept pace. There are many reasons for that, such as better financing through USDA loans outside the city, but schools play a huge role in the homebuyers’ decision making process.

“Having a good partnership with the realtors, if they have people moving in with elementary or secondary children they can answer people’s questions or if not answer questions they will know who to contact in the school to organize tours and answer questions and concerns of parents,” said Supt. Dr. Gearl Loden.

Realtors say this outing gives them valuable insight into the school system.

“What I think is so important is, we are that first voice, we are the voice of Tupelo and I think we need to be able to be educated on what the schools are doing , what opportunities they have, the programs and what Tupelo has to offer,” said Greg Gillespie, broker at Tupelo’s Crye-Leike Realty.

“The school is very cooperative in giving tours and people coming in to live in Tupelo, school is very top on their list,” said Bea Luckett of TRI Realty.

Realtors heard from THS seniors, then a tour of the campus gave realtors a better picture of the learning environment.

Like most open houses this one took about two hours, that was by design, realtors are busy, but those who took part in this tour are better equipped to share valuable information about the school system with prospective home buyers.
