COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-You may notice as the weather gets colder, more and more people start getting sicker.

Viruses like the flu, spread commonly through the winter, especially after someone sneezes or coughs causing their congestion to spread through the air and settle on surfaces such as door knobs, chairs and key boards.

Dr. Keith Watson, a pediatrician at the Children’s Medical Center in West Point, shares some tips on how to prevent from catching the virus.

“Absolutely the number one way to prevent any infection is hand washing. If you wash your hands and keep your hands…even if you use the hand sanitizer hand washing is the best prevention. Second…get your child as long as they are over six months of age their influenza vaccine,” says Dr. Keith Watson.

Another way to prevent spreading the flu is by staying home when you have cold-like symptoms including:

-Weak or Tired

-A High Fever

-Body Aches

-Cold Chills
