COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-The Magnolia State was once known as one of the most charitable states in the U.S. but now, that is no longer the case.

According to wallethub.com, Mississippi is not even in the top ten.

The state is ranked 22nd out of the 50 states.

Despite the low ranking in the survey, some charities in Lowndes County say that’s just not true.
“There’s a lot of giving going on in, especially in Columbus Mississippi,” public relations officer Rhonda Sanders said.

Tis the season of giving.

Whether it’s money, toys or even time, the spirit of giving is definitely in the air.

“It’s the friendly city, so along with friendly, is generosity and giving,” Executive Director at United Way of Lowndes County Patricia Brock said.

Brock said when it comes to giving, the biggest misconception is that it has to be about the money.

“There’s plenty of little things you may have around your house that somebody else could be using, and that counts as giving as well,” she said.

“People who donated their time, sometimes that is what’s important,” Sanders said.

Sanders is in the middle of running a toy drive for the Columbus Police Department.

She said she’s had numerous people stop by and give donations.

“We’ve had schools that have called, classes that have called, I’ve had several churches whose congregation are going to bring toys to donate,” Sanders said.

Despite the low ranking, Brock said it’s a no brainer, that people here are generous with their gifts.

“I believe if you took everybody in Lowndes County and stacked them up, I think our rates would be up a lot higher,” Brock said.

Both United Way, and The Columbus Police Department are still seeking donations.

To donate to the Toy Drive, feel free to bring an unwrapped toy to the police department or any of the banks on Main Street.
