Tishomingo Death Row Inmate Wants New Trial

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Death row inmate Michelle Byrom argues in new documents filed with the Mississippi Supreme Court that she has new evidence that her son killed her husband and never hired sought to hitman as he told prosecutors.

Byrom’s attorneys ask the Supreme Court on Monday to grant her motion to pursue that issue in trial court. In such post-conviction petitions, an inmate argues he has found new evidence – or a possible constitutional issue – that could persuade a court to order a new trial.

Also Monday, Attorney General Jim Hood asked the Supreme Court to set an execution date for March 27. The U.S. Supreme Court denied Byrom’s motion Monday to hear an appeal.

Byrom was convicted and sentenced to death in 2000 in Tishomingo County for the killing her husband.
