Tishomingo Resident Memorializes Sister with Education Scholarship

STARKVILLE, Miss. (Press Release) — Mary Ann Long of Tishomingo is remembering her sister through the establishment of the Louise Long Lishman Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Mississippi State’s College of Education.

Lishman was a 1958 elementary education graduate of the university who began her career as a first-grade teacher in Alabama with the Huntsville City Schools. A Vaiden native who died in 2013, she taught for 30 years before retiring.

“Establishing this scholarship was a way for me to pay tribute to my sister as a teacher,” said Long, a retired Hinds Community College librarian and 1959 MSU College of Education alumna.

The inaugural scholarship will be awarded during the 2015 fall semester. Candidates must be enrolled full-time in elementary education, with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) and demonstrated financial need.

“The MSU College of Education is very grateful to Ms. Long for the creation of this scholarship in memory of her sister,” said Dean Richard Blackbourn. “Many students for years to come will benefit from this generous gift and have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of becoming educators.”

MSU scholarship endowments may be established with gifts of at least $25,000. The Lishman Scholarship fund is open for additional contributions.
