Video: More Tourism Coming to the Golden Triangle

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Two million dollars. That’s what the Columbus-Lowndes County Convention and Visitors Bureau is projecting for the weekend ahead.

The President’s Cup Soccer Tournament will be in town. Hotels will be full. Restaurants will be bustling.

Visit Columbus Executive Director Nancy Carpenter says the warm welcome keeps the players and families coming back.

“There are over 109 teams that are coming and of course you’ve got not only the team players, but you’ve got parents and grandparents and siblings,” Carpenter says.

And that’s not all.

“People that are coming to town for the softball tournament and coming for the bass tournament, it easily will be two and a half,” says Carpenter, in reference to the amount of incoming revenue.

Tournament fisherman will be in town, and fans of SEC softball will be visiting the Golden Triangle. Area events mean sharing the wealth.

Hotel rooms are booked from Aberdeen to Louisville.

Leslie Herrington is the General Manager of the Days Inn in Columbus and America’s Best Value Inn in West Point. She says, “All of our rooms are completely rented for both Friday and Saturday night and we do anticipate to be at full occupancy at both properties even with cancellations there are still a lot of people looking for rooms, so we know we should be full both nights.”

The economic impact is expected to keep innkeepers smiling and the local welcome warm.
