TPWD To Help Tupelo Residents With “Spring Cleaning”

TUPELO, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) – The City of Tupelo Public Works Department is ready to serve Tupelo residents with brush and large trash removal.

With warmer temperatures and sunny skies, most people are thinking about spring cleaning. The City of Tupelo brush routes are divided into three sections, using a fleet of five trucks.

The department’s sanitation division runs the routes regularly to service all city maintained streets.

Waste Management is a private company contracted by the City of Tupelo to provide services, such as:

  • Picking up bagged leaves, which must be placed in bags no larger than lawn leaf bags and they must be placed on the curb accompanied by the household bin assigned to the residence by Waste Management.
  •  Debris small enough to be placed in a lawn leaf bag or small box and accompanied by the household bin assigned to the residence by Waste Management.

Tupelo City Council guidelines and requirements from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, determines the parameters under which the Public Works Department enforces and brush and large trash removal program.

These guidelines include:

  •  Debris piles should be placed behind the curb in front of your residence. The property owner is responsible for proper placement.
  • Piles of debris should never block traffic flow or visibility of the rights of way.
  •  Multiple small piles of debris work well. o One long pile of debris will suffice.
  •  Avoid storm drains and fire plugs • Avoid low utility lines and limbs
  •  Do not block a driveway or sidewalk

Public Works will not pick up:

  •  Paint cans
  •  Dead animals
  •  Leaves or pine needles (bagged or loose)
  •  Rocks, bricks or concrete
  •  Scrap building materials from house demolition or fire destruction
  •  Bagged or boxed materials
  •  Mirrors, plate glass or glass door
  •  Glass or plastic bottles
  •  Metal or plastic buckets or drums
  •  Food containers
  •  Household garbage

The Public Works Department picks up debris for residential properties only.

The department will not pick up for:

  •  Commercial buildings or properties
  •  Apartment complexes
  •  Vacant lots
  •  New building sites (residential or commercial)

The Public Works Department will pick up debris for remodeling projects completed by the property owner.
