COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — After more than a year of diScussions, a low-cost public transit system may actually be on the horizon in Columbus.

Representatives of Indiana-based Lawrence Transit are scheduled to ask the city’s Historic Preservation Commission to approve bus stop shelters for the four corners of Main and Fifth streets in downtown Columbus and College Street across from the main entrance to Mississippi University for Women.

The bus stop issue is the latest in a string of delays and missteps related to getting the service up and running.

Approval of the shelters from the commission and then the City Council would clear the way for the company to install those and other shelters and start running buses in the city.

Company officials say they hope to be up and running by October.
