COLUMBUS, Miss. – (WCBI) Even with a two dollar a month increase in trash collection fees, Columbus will lose money providing that service.

City Finance Director and Attorney Jeff Turnage told the city council Tuesday that accounting for landfill fees, picking up leaves and debris and other similar services will cost more than $2.3 million next year.

That’s $97,000 more than trash fees bring in, even with the increase.

The council approved the increase tonight rather than consider other options like cutting trash service back to once a week.

Under the new spending plan that takes effect October 1st if approved next week, the $97,000 is part of $326,000 the council will take from reserves to avoid a tax increase.
