Trial Set For Former Saltillo Assistant Police Chief

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) – A trial in a wrongful termination suit filed by the former Saltillo assistant police chief is scheduled for 2016 in federal court in Oxford.

Last fall, Prentice Brown sued the town and former Mayor Bill Williams. Brown says Williams gave no reason for suspending him on June 13, 2013.

Williams was recently dismissed as a defendant.

Brown worked for the police department for 10 years and was a vocal supporter of former Police Chief Steve Brooks’ Democratic bid for mayor.

According to the lawsuit, Williams, in local media interviews, said the suspension was because Brooks’ supporters were intimidating political opponents, which led to perceived infighting in the police department.

Brown was fired by the board of aldermen on July 10, 2013, after a due process hearing.
