Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — It was an early morning for many athletes today in Columbus set to conquer more than 20 miles on land and water.

Swimming, running, and biking were the three tasks many people from all over had to accomplish to say they conquered the Possum Town Triathlon.

And many of those who finished had their own motivation to guide them.

“We wanted to celebrate our anniversary by doing this together…it was just a special time”, said Brandy Maulden, who was celebrating her 17 year anniversary to her husband, Glen.

“This year is to honor the Air Force and all the Service members that come out of that service…”, said Air Force ROTC member Corey Persons, “…big ol’ Air Power to all the Air Force people especially here in Columbus and abroad.”

“I started training to get closer to God and I pray the whole time during my triathlon and when I go across that finish line I just thank him and I do it for my family and my little girl Alana”, said Tupelo resident Carey Snyder.

The triathletes had to swim 600 meters, bike 17 miles, and finish it off by running 3.3 miles.

“You train every day for these kinds of events and you enjoy the camaraderie of all your friends but when you cross the finish line its like pay day”, said Tupelo resident Jeff Snyder about finally crossing the finish line.
