TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The City of Tupelo approved a plan to help officers and families who are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty.

The decision was made during tonight’s meeting.

The policy will initially benefit officer Joseph Maher and the family of officer Gale Stauffer.

Stauffer was killed and Maher was injured in a Dec. 23, 2013 shootout with a bank robbery suspect.

Maher continues to recover after being shot in the head.

Under the policy, the city would pay the difference between disability and workman’s comp benefits and the officer’s salary.
