TUPELO, Miss.  (WCBI) — A second-term Tupelo councilman announced his resignation this afternoon.

Ward 3 Tupelo Councilman Jim Newell tendered his resignation through a letter addressed to each of the six council members.

Newell and his wife recently moved from their home in Ward 3, which, pursuant to Mississippi code (click here to view statute), deems him ineligible to hold his current seat.

Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton said he considered Newell not only a friend, but also a “great public servant.”

In order to fill the now-vacant seat, the city must hold a special election.

Newell had nearly three years remaining in his term.
