TUPELO, MS (WCBI) – Tupelo is getting another few days to seek bids  for a new air carrier.  Today was the deadline set by the U.S. Department of Transportation for airlines to bid on providing flights from Tupelo.  The DOT has now added five days to that deadline setting November 9th as the new target for bids to be turned in.  Tupelo has been without commercial flights since October 23rd.  That’s when Seaport Airlines abruptly ended service.  The Tupelo Airport Authority had already ended it’s contract with Seaport because of poor service but the airline was scheduled to stay until December.   Airlines serving Tupelo are able to take part in the Essential Air Service program.  That’s a plan where the federal government subsidizes air service to smaller airports across the country.
