TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – With the second anniversary of the Tupelo tornado approaching, two community associations have teamed up to raise money for the continued reforestation of the damaged neighborhoods.

The memories of the tornado are still vivid nearly two years later. Many houses were damaged or completely destroyed, and many trees were ripped out, leaving residences without the shade they really appreciated. Now members of the Bel Air Homeowners association and the Joyner Homeowners association want to bring back that shade so they held a golf tournament, and auction at the Bel Air Country Club. Sherry Elmore is President of the Bel Air Home Owners Association.

“We have worked to I guess re-establish the canopy that we lost from the tornado.,” she says Along McCullough Boulevard, the Rogers Drive area took a huge hit. There and along Jenkins,” Elmore recalls.

Wendy Frazier with the Joyner Home Owners Association.

“Well it looked very bleak two years ago but there’s been a lot of replanting efforts and then the two seasons of spring have really helped to bring the trees and a lot of them healed and they’ve started shaping back up again,” she explains.  “But we’re going to continue to put out more trees. The city’s done a lot with landscaping and planting along their right of way and so we’ve to now work on getting into the private property and our neighbors and their yards and kind of help them readjust, Frazier promises.

They hope that this event will raise 10-thousand dollars which will be evenly split between the two neighborhood associations.
