Tupelo Mayor Will Not Veto Airport Funding Request

TUPELO, Miss. (Press Release) — Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton announced today that he will not veto the measure passed by the city council to make an additional $500,000 available to the Tupelo Airport Authority for repair work to the taxiway damaged by large planes brought in by Universal Asset Management (UAM).

“I’m not going to veto this funding, but I will veto any further spending to benefit UAM without a shared commitment from the company to correspond with the city’s investments in these facilities on which they operate,” Shelton said.

Shelton also said that he will veto any further funding requests before the city by the Tupelo Airport Authority or Director Josh Abramson that does not allow an appropriate amount of time for review and consideration.

“I just will not consider any more last minute requests absent a true emergency,” Shelton said. “The taxpayers, through their elected representatives, deserve more time to carefully consider decisions that require spending city funds. While we greatly value the jobs created by UAM, it should be noted that UAM does not pay any property, inventory or other form of taxes that benefit the Tupelo Public School District or the city of Tupelo,” Shelton added.
