Tupelo, Miss. (WCBI) – More than 300 Tupelo city workers could get a small pay raise as early as next month.

The city council Tuesday tentatively approved budget amendments that eliminate four vacant jobs, saving almost 180 thousand. That’s enough to provide employees a 1 percent pay raise for employees and still leave a thousand dollars left over.

Council members must formally approve the deal when they meet next week. If so, the raise will take effect with the next pay check. The changes are part of a long-term effort to keep city salaries competitive while reducing payroll costs as a share of the city budget.

The last pay raise was a 3 percent bump more than two years ago.
