COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Tupelo teen is trying to help those who served our country, but she needs your help.

Ashton Swearingen is trying to bring the documentary “Project 22” to the Malco in Columbus.

Ashton Swearingen is only 18, but she’s been studying vet suicide statistics for a few years, prompted by a paper she had to write in school.

Now she wants to bring what she found to the public.

“22 veterans take their lives everyday, ” says Swearingen.

That’s a number Ashton Swearingen wants to lower, hoping to save lives, it’s a cause close to her heart.

“My uncle served in Iraq, and he did come back with some problems. And a lot of the people in his unit have fallen victim to suicide. He just had one of his buddies take his own life, right before Memorial Day,” says Swearingen.

“Project 22” is a documentary that is also trying to lower that number, telling the stories of veterans going through the struggles that come with life after war.

and Swearingen wants their stories told in Columbus, to help spread a message of hope.

“They’re not alone, and there’s a giant network for support and civilians by knowing what to look for,” Swearingen.

To make it happen she has to sell 68 more tickets to the Malco in less than 2 weeks, it’s a big task, but to Swearingen it’s a priceless opportunity.

” We’ll it’s worth 22 lives, is that not convincing enough?,” says Swearingen.
